The proposed commission would include at least 15 members, a mix of city staff and local residents, tasked with recruiting and supporting sporting and entertainment.

GASTONIA, N.C. — Gastonia city council will discuss a new proposal that could help attract more major events, from sporting tournaments to live concerts, to the city on Tuesday, Oct. 21.

The plan would establish a Sports and Entertainment Commission, designed to grow Gastonia’s footprint as a regional destination.

The proposed commission would include at least 15 members, a mix of city staff and local residents, tasked with recruiting and supporting sporting and entertainment events.

Molly Gaston, owner of Faded Cuts and Shaves in downtown Gastonia, says the plan could be a win for small businesses like hers.

“If we can add some more businesses, or get some sports teams here, I’m completely down with that it sounds like a great plan,” Gaston said. “The more people through the door, the more recognition — that’s how word spreads that we’re here and growing.”

Since the Gastonia Ghost Peppers baseball team rebranded last year, business leaders say the city has seen a surge in energy and foot traffic. The new commission aims to build on that momentum.

“I think there is a lot of uncharted territory with buildings and places to do things,” Gaston added. “There’s great opportunity to bring in big names and events because people are always looking for things to do.”

Dandria Bradley, Gastonia’s communications and marketing director, said the commission would play a hands-on role in shaping the city’s entertainment landscape.

“They will be charged with attracting events to our existing facilities, supporting current events, and evaluating what improvements or modifications are needed,” Bradley said.

If council members approve the ordinance, the next step will be opening applications for residents interested in serving on the new commission.
