The head of the Hamilton County Republican Party is pushing back on Islamic schools being able to receive money from Tennessee’s school voucher program.

Governor Bill Lee’s Education Freedom Scholarship Act was passed during a special legislative session in late January of 2025 and signed into law soon after.

On Thursday, the Education Freedom Act passed in the state house by a vote of 54-44 and a vote of 20-13 in the senate.

It gives families more than $7,000 to help pay for private school tuition.

Hamilton County Republican Party Chair Gail Greene says she is upset because that money can be used for Islamic education.

Of the 241 private schools that are participating in the school voucher program, five are Islamic schools and 203 are Christian schools.
