From the creators of the Portland Pickles and Portland Bangers, a new pre-professional women’s soccer team will kick off in the Rose City next spring.
COLLiDE Sport announced Monday that it had secured the rights to bring a USL W League to Portland — the only team of its kind in the city. The group debuted the Portland Bangers this summer and introduced us all to the humor (horror?) that is mascot Saucy T. Sausage.
The as-of-yet unnamed women’s soccer team will compete in the Northwest Division and is scheduled to play its first game in May, according to a news release.
“Portland has always stood at the heart of American soccer,” COLLiDE Sport owner Alan Miller said in the release, “and now we’re proud to bring that same energy to the women’s game.”
The waitlist for season tickets opened Monday morning and can be joined online.
Details about the team’s home venue, coaches and, yes, name will be unveiled to the public in November, according to the release.
The announcement didn’t necessarily say it was seeking the opinion of a The Oregonian/OregonLive reporter, but here’s some input anyway: The team name has to be food related, right? More specifically, snacks-you-might-eat-at-a-barbecue related? Saucy and older brother Dillon T. Pickle are in need of a third menu item.
So, what goes with pickles and sausages? We’ll leave that to you.
