LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – A Lubbock-non profit serving elderly, low-income homeowners received a $10,000 donation from South Plains Electric Cooperative and CoBank.

The donation will benefit Backyard Mission to provide free home repairs. Right now, the non-profit’s goal is trying to get 100 people to pledge $100 a month. With the help of SPEC and CoBank, this will help them get a head start.

Backyard Mission received a $10,000 donation from South Plains Electric Cooperative and CoBank to help them accomplish their mission of repairing homes and restoring hope. The check presentation will be on October 6 at 2 p.m. at Backyard Mission (8205 Quincy Ave).

Backyard Mission serves elderly, low-income homeowners in the city of Lubbock. For 2025, Backyard Mission is trying to get 100 people to pledge $100 per month. With the help of SPEC and CoBank, this will help them get a head start.

“South Plains Electric Cooperative was happy to partner with CoBank for the tenth year, and together, help make a difference locally,” said General Manager Dale Ancell.

Typical repairs provided by Backyard Mission include siding, doors and window repair or replacement. All repairs are done by volunteers and donations help to purchase materials.

The non-profit also assists with heaters and water heaters.

“Our heart is that people know there is a God who sees them, knows them, and loves them. We get to share that love with them when we work on their homes,” said Laurie Foster, Founder and Director at Backyard Mission.

South Plains Electric Cooperative’s donation was matched by CoBank through its Sharing Success program. Sharing Success was established in 2012 to celebrate the International Year of the Cooperative.
