MACOMB (WGEM) – Members of the city, McDonough Area Economic Development and The Sports Facilities Companies were on hand to listen to what residents had to say about the project.
Macomb City Administrator Scott Coker said there was much interest in the project.
“Concern about the size of the project. This is a very big project for Macomb. A lot of unknown, we haven’t had a lot of information to give out yet,” said Coker. “While we’re doing our due diligence process and we’re still working through that so by the first of the calendar year 2026 we’re hoping to have a bigger presentation that we can give out.”
The goal is to build a sports complex that will attract volleyball and basketball tournaments so people will stay in Macomb.
“Some folks want a waterpark, a new swimming pool but this facility is to bring folks from within two and a half hours away for basketball and volleyball tournaments, that’s what it’s planned for and that’s what Sports Facilities has shown is the need and we can fill the building around 35 weekends a year with tournaments and that’s what brings the people here and the money here,” said Coker.
The proposed sports complex would cost around $60 million, and the city is still working out how to pay for the project.
“Not that we want to hide anything, it’s just we’re not to a real good point to tell a big story, a good story so we want to get the message out, we think this is a very positive thing for Macomb, but we still need to figure out if it can be paid for. If it’s not possible then we got to find something else,” said Coker.
Right now, the plan would be to package funding from sources such as naming rights, grants, sales tax, and TIF District money.
City council will ultimately make the final decision on the project.
