CLERMONT, Fla. — The city of Clermont is looking to boost its sports tourism and recreation over the next 15-30 years as part of its comprehensive plan.
On Sept. 23, the city awarded contracts to both the American Bicycle Association and DPZ Co-Design to collaborate on the next steps with the goal of creating and improving trails, and building sports facilities.
“Not only are we supporting the professional and Olympic level of sports that already exist here, but we’re also creating the opportunities for the children and families of Clermont to be exposed to some of those Olympians and pros,” Clermont City Council Member Alison Strange said.
Strange is at the forefront of this initiative, and said Clermont currently generates about 75% of the tourist development tax for Lake County.
From bike trails to the lakes, she said members of the council believe that by enhancing what they already have, they will support the local economy and attract other people and businesses that can improve the community.
“We want to make sure that any effort we put in is actually going to support businesses that are already here,” Strange said. “That is the value of the robust and tourism plan.”
As the city gets started with the plan, its entrepreneurs and business owners, like Valerie Schuett, are excited for what the future of recreation and sports holds.
“We’re going to activate potential and increase the quality of life for residents like myself,” Schuett said.
Schuett owns Midpoint Rec, a local business that rents out bikes, kayaks and paddle boards. As she continues to build her business, she sees no better place than Clermont, which is at the center of the coast-to-coast bike trail.
“It became apparent to me that there was a really incredible opportunity to help people enjoy the lake and enjoy the trails, which inspired the idea for this business,” she said.
While the city is in the early stages of its plan, officials are planning to hold future public meetings for residents to get involved.
