Just weeks before India’s national elections, Elon Musk’s X said it was rolling out support for publishing “Community Notes” – the corporate’s crowdsourced fact-checking program – in a key overseas market.
X said the primary group of authors from India will start publishing notes from today and more shall be accepted over time. Authors typically add more context to popular posts to debunk myths or provide broader insights. These reports are then rated by users on aspects corresponding to how useful they’re or how accurate they’re.
In December 2022, the social network allowed people to view community notes related to posts all over the world, but users from only a number of countries could post such notes.
Over time, the corporate allowed members from different countries to begin publishing community notes to raised provide local context. With the newest implementation, this system has participants in 69 countries.
Last yr, the corporate also introduced Community Notes, previously called Birdwatch, for storing photos and videos.
India was one of the last major markets where community bonds didn’t take off earlier. With the national elections just weeks away, many platforms are making efforts to combat potential election-related disinformation. However, Company X has not made any specific announcement about its efforts for Indian elections.
While Community Notes is useful in fact-checking posts on X, it sometimes causes problems control the spread of disinformation despite the authors adding context to the story. The program may be put to the test in India’s complex, multilingual political landscape.
Last yr, the corporate re-allowed political ads on the platform, which had been banned by previous management.
Twitter/X has had a difficult time in the Indian market, especially resulting from a legal battle with the federal government over ordering the platform to dam certain posts. Earlier this yr, X suppressed some accounts and posts related to farmer protests in India resulting from government orders. At the time, the corporate reiterated that appeals difficult the blocking orders were still pending in court.
Musk said this in an interview with the BBC last yr Indian social media rules are quite strict and the corporate “may not exceed the regulations applicable in a given country.”
