On Sept. 10, the Florence Douglas Center welcomed their new Executive Director, Emmanuel Carrie. A Bay Area native who earned a Master of Arts Degree in Humanities, Carrie has served with various community organizations including the East Oakland Community Project, St. Vincent DePaul Society, Edgewood Center for Children and Families, and Arc of Alameda County. On Sept. 14, the Mare Island Historic Park Foundation (MIHPF) hosted their Founder's Day Living History Tour: WWII Edition at Mare Island. The sold-out event had everyone step back in time and experience Mare Island's vital role in World War II. The fascinating guided walking tour featured: a) Mel Orpilla who vividly spoke about his father, Nozorio, who worked on the shipyard and meritoriously served in the US Navy during WWII; b) Wendy the Welders who represented the women who welded and assembled steel plates into war ships and the Rosie the Riveters; and c) the Interpreting History Acting Troupe who conducted live reenactments, shipyard stories, and historic characters. The MIHPF is a non-profit organization whose mission is to collect, preserve, and interpret the history of Mare Island and to present exhibits and programs that explore, educate, and celebrate the diverse military and cultural aspects of the Island. This celebration will highlight the traditions, history, and artistic achievements of Indigenous communities through traditional medicine making, art, music, storytelling, and hands-on activities. Artist Debuts include: Alicia Gomez will unveil her striking new metal art piece, "Mother Earth: Magnificent Diversity;" Renowned drum maker Richard Flittie will share his craft, bringing the heartbeat of Native tradition to life; Marcelina Chendy, a celebrated Indigenous artist, will exhibit her latest works; and Chris Micro, another talented Indigenous artist, will also showcase his art.
