Fantasy sports operator PrizePicks is returning to New York, more than a year after being ordered to cease operations in the state by gaming regulators over a licensing dispute.
PrizePicks announced Wednesday that it had been awarded an interactive fantasy sports operating license by the New York State Gaming Commission and planned to reenter the market in the coming weeks.
PrizePicks will return to New York and offer only its peer-to-peer fantasy contests. The company said in a Wednesday release that it worked closely with the NYSGC to ensure that its contests comply with the state’s fantasy sports statutes.
“We worked diligently to design a game that meets the Commission’s rigorous standards, and New York’s decision underscores the idea that innovation in fantasy sports can thrive within a clear regulatory framework,” Jason Barclay, PrizePicks’ head of public policy and chief legal officer, said in the release.
In a letter to PrizePicks dated Oct. 10, the NYSGC wrote that the company met each of the requirements to operate its contests in the market and therefore would be allowed to return to New York.
In February 2024, PrizePicks agreed to cease its for-money contests in New York and pay nearly $15 million to the state’s gaming commission for operating without a license. The settlement between PrizePicks and the NYSGC came four months after New York clarified its fantasy sports regulations, disallowing contests that mimic prop betting.
“By issuing this license, the Gaming Commission is making a clear statement that our state will continue to embrace innovative Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) games that provide New Yorkers with safe, skill-based contests they can enjoy with friends, family, and fellow sports fans,” New York State Sen. Joseph Addabbo said in a statement.
PrizePicks offers fantasy games in more than 45 jurisdictions, according to the company.
