Selena Gomez is opening up about her unexpected reaction to getting married last month — and why she struggles to accept some of life’s joyful moments.

The Rare Beauty founder, 33, spoke at Fortune‘s Most Powerful Women conference in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, Oct. 15, and was pressed by journalist Ellie Austin on an earlier comment she’d made about feeling like she didn’t deserve to be in the room.

Austin pointed out that Gomez’s Rare Beauty, which she launched in 2020, is valued at more than $2 billion.

Still, the “Bluest Flame” singer admitted that she often has a hard time letting joy into her life, as it’s often followed by an irrational sense of dread.

“This is how I work personally, but something great happens in my life, I expect something bad to happen,” Gomez explained. “So instead of being present and saying, ‘OK, wow, we’ve done a great thing,’ which I do, I’m always thinking, ‘OK, but this could all go away tomorrow, so how can I make sure that doesn’t happen?’”

The Only Murders in the Building star said she often gets “wrapped up” in those worries instead of just enjoying the good things that happen to her — even at her recent wedding to Benny Blanco.

“I would say that’s my biggest conflict sometimes when wonderful things happen,” she said. “I got married and then I was sobbing because I was like, ‘I’m gonna die the next day.’ I just think that’s a little life thing.”

Gomez married the music producer, 37, in California on Sept. 27 after two years of dating in a star-studded ceremony that included celebrity guests like Taylor Swift, Steve Martin, Martin Short, Paul Rudd, Cara Delevingne, Ed Sheeran and SZA.

“There was so much love in the room,” a source close to the couple told PEOPLE of the wedding. “At the reception, everyone was letting loose and celebrating them well into the night. The vibe was so much fun.”

The source added that the newlyweds were “glowing all night” and “couldn’t stop smiling.”

In a post celebrating the nuptials on his Instagram, Blanco captioned the post, “I married a real life disney princess.”
