The NBA regular season is here, and it started with a star-heavy doubleheader on Tuesday night.
A 40-year-old LeBron James will miss the Los Angeles Lakers’ opener against the Golden State Warriors. The four-time league MVP and four-time NBA champ is dealing with sciatica and is reportedly eying a mid-November return. James’ early-season absence could set the stage for the beginning of a Luka Dončić MVP campaign. Dončić is new and improved, and embarking on his first full season with the Lakers against a Warriors team that’s equipped with an aging but championship-hungry trio of Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and Jimmy Butler.

Kevin Durant made his debut with the Houston Rockets earlier in the night, but he couldn’t quite lead them to a win over the defending champions. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Oklahoma City Thunder pulled off a wild 125-124 win over the Rockets in double overtime in what was the perfect opening night thriller for the league.

Rui Hachimura hit back-to-back 3-pointers on assists from Luka Doncic in the final 90 seconds, and then Doncic hit a wild deep one of his own to get the Lakers back in it before the break.
But a pair of Jimmy Butler free throws put the Warriors up by a point at halftime. After what looked like the early rumblings of a blowout, we’ve got a game.

Marcus Smart just locked Stephen Curry’s arm and sort of threw him to the ground hard there as they were fighting for position. Officials upgraded that to a Flagrant 1 after a review. That wasn’t necessary, and it’s just the latest major foul already tonight.

With that game now in the books, NBC has finally switched over to the second game of the night — and it’s almost halftime in Los Angeles.
The Warriors have led almost the entire way so far in what’s been a pretty chippy contest. They’re up 37-31 with 7:09 left in the second quarter.

Jabari Smith Jr. has to force a tough shot and he misses big. That’ll do it in a wild one in OKC.

The Thunder predictably went to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander on their final possession, and he predictably drew some free throws at the expense of Kevin Durant, who now has to exit the game. SGA makes both of them to put the Thunder up one with 2.3 seconds left.

A Rockets possession was going nowhere, until Alperen Sengun got the ball with some momentum and added two more points in the point. Jabari Smith Jr. kept that possession going with a great rebound too. Houston up 124-123, with 11 seconds left.

The second-year player makes a half-hearted pass to Kevin Durant with Lu Dort on him and Dort did his usual thing. That leads to more free throws for SGA, who splits them to give his team a one-point lead. This has not been a good game for Sheppard, who is 3-for-11 from the floor and getting cooked on defense.

Cason Wallace made a huge 3-pointer to give OKC the lead, but Kevin Durant makes a an and-1 17 seconds later to put Houston back ahead. Rockets up two with about a minute left.

Not that anybody is watching with a double OT thriller going on, but the Warriors have jumped up over the Lakers early in Los Angeles.
The Lakers are 1-of-9 from behind the arc with eight turnovers already tonight. Jimmy Butler has 12 points for the Warriors, and went a perfect 7-of-7 from the stripe.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander missed a would-be winner, but Kevin Durant called for timeout. He did not have any timeouts, which would be a technical foul. The Thunder protest as the game goes to double OT, but Durant lucked out because the refs didn’t actually grant him the timeout.

With Holmgren out, the Rockets center takes it into the paint, misses a shot, but then gets his own rebound for a putback dunk. We’re all tied up, Thunder ball with 8.8 seconds left.

Holmgren had a chance to put OKC up multiple scorees, but he got blocked by Jabari Smith Jr. and then committed a foul from the floor. He’s out of the game, with the Thunder now only up two with 16.7 seconds left.
Amen Thompson has also been out with some apparent cramping.
