An NBA coach and player have been arrested by the FBI and accused of gambling on the sport, with one having alleged ties to the mafia. One other person arrested is a former player.

According to ESPN and CBS News, Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups, former coach Damon Jones, and player Terry Rozier were arrested on Thursday, Oct. 23.

Rozier is part of a sting that involved six people who have been charged in the case.

Billups was arrested in connection with a separate probe by the Department of Justice on gambling, though it was careful to add that Billups did not bet on the NBA. However, the FBI claims that Billups had ties to the mafia.

The publication stated that FBI director Kash Patel is expected to announce the charges during a press conference on Thursday at 10 a.m. ET.

Rozier, a guard for the Miami Heat, is accused of playing only 10 minutes on March 23, 2023, when he played for the Charlotte Hornets. That day, sports books in multiple states said they flagged unusual activity. The FBI said there was a large number of bets placed on Rozier to have low number of points, rebounds and assists, which caused several sports books to close down prop betting on his statistics.

Rozier was arrested at a hotel in Orlando, Fla., on Thursday morning. Billups was arrested at home in Portland, Ore.

According to Jim Trusty, Rozier’s attorney, said the player met with the NBA and FBI on multiple occasions to talk about that day in question. He maintains his innocence.
