
Who has been busted for sports gambling? Here’s a list of the major betting scandals
Take a look at all the players and coaches who have been involved in gambling allegations.
Sports gambling has become normalized in American society.
Since the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark decision to legalize the practice in 2018, betting companies have infiltrated the sports world. From sponsorships to endorsement deals and nonstop advertisements, it’s hard to avoid it if you’re a sports fan.
With that has obviously come some challenges involving players and coaches. People in various sports leagues have been busted for illegally betting as they navigate the policies that each league has.
So, which players and coaches have gotten in trouble for gambling? And what were their punishments? Here’s a breakdown by each league since sports betting was legalized:
NBA players and coaches gambling scandals and allegations
Jontay Porter, Raptors: Banned from the NBA for life after an investigation found he had bet on league games and shared confidential information with gamblers. His sentencing date for wire fraud is set for Dec. 10, 2025.
Malik Beasley, Pistons: Investigated and cleared of a federal gambling investigation in August 2025, Beasley remains unsigned after allegations of gambling on NBA games and prop bets.
Terry Rozier, Heat: Arrested in Florida on Oct. 23, 2025, and accused of participating in an illegal sports betting scheme using private insider NBA information.
Chauncey Billups, Trail Blazers head coach: Arrested in Oregon and charged in a wide-ranging scheme to rig underground poker games that were backed by Mafia families. The defendants are accused of using technology to steal millions from victims in the New York area.
NFL players and coaches gambling scandals and allegations
Josh Shaw, Cardinals: On Nov. 29, 2019, Shaw was suspended indefinitely for making a low four-figure bet in Las Vegas on a three-team parlay involving his team. The NFL reinstated him on March 20, 2021, but he did not play in the league again.
Calvin Ridley, Falcons: Suspended for the entire 2022 season for gambling on NFL games a year earlier while away from the Falcons to address mental health concerns.
Miles Austin, Jets coach: Suspended indefinitely in 2022 for violating the NFL’s gambling policy, betting on non-NFL professional and college sports while in the team facility.
Jameson Williams and Stanley Berryhill, Lions: Both Detroit players were suspended six games for mobile betting that occurred at the team facility on non-NFL sports.
Quintez Cephus, C.J. Moore and Demetrius Taylor, Lions: These Detroit players were suspended for the entire 2023 season after betting on NFL games. Neither has played again in the NFL.
Nicholas Petit-Frere, Titans: Suspended six games for betting on non-NFL sports at the team facility.
Eyioma Uwazurike, Broncos: Suspended for the entire 2023 season after betting on NFL games.
Shaka Toney, Commanders: Suspended for the entire 2023 season after betting on NFL games. Toney has not played again in the NFL.
Isaiah Rodgers and Rashod Berry, Colts: These Indianapolis players were suspended for the entire 2023 season after betting on NFL games. Rodgers, currently on the Vikings, won a Super Bowl with the Eagles in February 2025, while Berry hasn’t played an NFL game since being reinstated.
MLB players and coaches gambling scandals and allegations
Shohei Ohtani/Ippei Mizuhara, Angels: Ohtani, MLB’s biggest global star, was caught in a scandal where his interpreter, Mizuhara, was charged with bank fraud and tax evasion. He used Ohtani’s funds to repay debts to a bookie and was sentenced to 57 months in prison in February 2025.
Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz, Guardians: These Cleveland relief pitchers were placed non-disciplinary paid leave by MLB in July 2025 over a gambling investigation.
Tucupita Marcano, Pirates: MLB banned Marcana for life in June 2024 after finding that he placed 387 bets on MLB and international contests, wagering more than $150,000, including on the team he was on when he was injured or inactive.
Michael Kelly, Athletics: Suspended for a full calendar year in June 2024 for violating the league’s sports betting policy, he returned to the field in June 2025. He did not place any bets in games that he played in.
Jay Groome, José Rodríguez and Andrew Saalfrank, minor leaguers: These three minor league players were suspended for a year in June 2024 for violating the MLB’s betting policy. None of them played in any game on which they placed a bet.
Pat Hoberg, umpire: He was fired in February 2025 for violating the league’s gambling rules. While he did not place bets on baseball or take any action to manipulate games, he shared accounts with a professional poker player and friend who did bet on baseball and Hoberg deleted messages with the friend.
NHL players and coaches gambling scandals and allegations
Shane Pinto, Senators: Suspended 41 games in October 2023 for activities relating to sports wagering, Pinto was found to have not made bets on NHL games.
College athletes and coaches gambling scandals and allegations
Brad Bohannon, Alabama baseball coach: Fired in May 2023 after failing to participate in the NCAA’s investigation into suspicious betting on an Alabama-LSU baseball game. The NCAA found that Bohannon violated wagering and ethical conduct rules and received a 15-year show-cause order.
13 former men’s basketball players: In September 2025, the NCAA alleged violations of sports betting rules and/or related failure-to-cooperate violations for 13 former men’s basketball student-athletes from six different schools: Eastern Michigan, Temple, Arizona State, New Orleans, North Carolina A&T and Mississippi Valley. Investigations are ongoing and names have not been released as of October 2025.
Mykell Robinson, Jalen Weaver and Steven Vasquez, Fresno State basketball players: Robinson manipulated his performance for gambling purposes and conspired with Weaver and Vasquez to place bets on his stats during the 2023-24 season. All three were ruled permanently ineligible from competing in the NCAA.
