Volume III — Identity
The official public definition of identity within the 360WiSE Framework, including entity clarity, relationship mapping, authoritative records, evidence, continuity, and machine-readable representation.
Official Definition
Identity within the 360WiSE Framework is the structured, evidence-supported representation of a person, business, organization, institution, government body, media property, brand, platform, or other participating entity.
Identity includes more than a name or profile. It includes the information necessary to distinguish the entity from others, establish its official relationships, document its history, connect relevant records, identify authoritative sources, and maintain a consistent public representation over time.
The Framework treats identity as a maintained infrastructure layer, not as a temporary description, social media profile, marketing statement, or isolated database entry.
Purpose
The purpose of the Identity layer is to establish a clear and durable public reference for determining who or what an entity is, which records belong to it, which relationships are official, and which sources should be treated as authoritative within the 360WiSE Framework.
A structured identity record helps reduce ambiguity, duplication, mistaken association, fragmented histories, outdated descriptions, and incorrect entity matching.
Identity provides the foundation upon which verification, resolution, provenance, continuity, registry publication, recognition observation, and public authority are built.
The Identity Problem
Digital identity is frequently distributed across many disconnected sources. A single entity may be represented differently across websites, social platforms, databases, applications, press articles, public records, directories, streaming platforms, search engines, and AI-generated responses.
Common identity problems include:
- Multiple entities sharing similar or identical names
- Brands being confused with their legal entities
- Founders being disconnected from the companies they created
- Subsidiaries being mistaken for independent organizations
- Former names remaining active without historical context
- Outdated biographies or leadership records
- Unverified social accounts being treated as official
- Apps or platforms being filed under a different publisher name
- Media properties being disconnected from their operators
- Duplicate profiles dividing the public record
- Incorrect geographic or industry classification
- Records being attributed to the wrong person or organization
These conditions can cause retrieval systems, people, institutions, search engines, and AI systems to interpret incomplete information as a complete description of the entity.
Identity Model
The 360WiSE Identity Model treats identity as a combination of distinguishable attributes, verified relationships, authoritative sources, historical context, and maintained records.
Entity Definition
Establishes the official name, type, description, purpose, operating status, and distinguishing characteristics of the entity.
Entity Distinction
Separates the entity from other people, businesses, organizations, brands, properties, and records with similar names or attributes.
Relationship Mapping
Documents official relationships between people, legal entities, brands, subsidiaries, platforms, media properties, locations, programs, and institutions.
Evidence Association
Connects material identity claims to appropriate supporting documents, records, official websites, filings, registrations, publications, or other authoritative sources.
Historical Continuity
Preserves changes in names, leadership, ownership, location, structure, status, and public description without erasing the earlier record.
Structured Publication
Publishes identity information in formats intended to remain understandable to both people and machines.
Core Identity Components
An identity record may contain the following components where relevant and appropriate:
- Official name
- Legal name
- Display name
- Former names
- Alternative names
- Entity type
- Official description
- Founding or formation information
- Current operating status
- Founder, owner, or governing authority
- Leadership and authorized representatives
- Parent, subsidiary, affiliate, or brand relationships
- Official websites and domains
- Verified social and media properties
- Physical locations and service areas
- Industry, profession, or operational categories
- Registrations, licenses, or credentials where applicable
- Applications, platforms, channels, or products
- Published media and public records
- Evidence and source references
- Corrections, updates, and revision history
- 360WiSE Registry identification
The presence of a field does not by itself establish that the field has been verified. Verification status must be determined separately according to published criteria.
Identity Record
An Identity Record is the organized collection of information used to distinguish and describe a participating entity within the 360WiSE Framework.
The record may include verified, documented, submitted, historical, observed, or publicly sourced information. The status of each material element should be identified according to the applicable governance and verification rules.
An Identity Record may be updated as the entity evolves. Material changes should be documented in a manner that preserves continuity and does not create a misleading impression that the prior record never existed.
Entity Relationships
Identity cannot always be understood through an isolated profile. Many entities exist within broader legal, operational, historical, ownership, publishing, or distribution relationships.
Documented relationships may include:
- Person to business
- Founder to company
- Executive to organization
- Brand to legal entity
- Parent company to subsidiary
- Organization to program
- Publisher to application
- Media company to channel
- Institution to department
- Government body to agency
- Creator to media property
- Platform to reference implementation
- Entity to official domain
- Entity to geographic jurisdiction
Relationship mapping helps prevent the false conclusion that connected records belong to unrelated entities simply because the names differ.
Identity and Evidence
Material identity claims should be associated with supporting evidence wherever appropriate.
Supporting evidence may include:
- Government records
- Corporate formation documents
- Licensing records
- Trademark registrations
- Official websites
- Platform publisher records
- Contracts or authorization documents
- Institutional publications
- Professional directories
- Official press materials
- Dated media coverage
- Technical records
- Historical archives
- Authorized submissions
The reliability, relevance, recency, and independence of the supporting source should be considered when determining the status of a claim.
Identity and Continuity
Identity changes over time. Organizations may rebrand, merge, relocate, change leadership, introduce new properties, discontinue services, or reorganize their legal and operating structures.
The Framework preserves continuity by documenting those changes rather than replacing the record without explanation.
Historical identity information may remain relevant when it explains how present-day records relate to earlier names, organizations, platforms, domains, publications, or leadership structures.
Machine-Readable Identity
Machine-readable identity is the structured representation of entity information in formats that digital systems can parse, connect, and evaluate.
Machine-readable publication may include structured fields, identifiers, relationship statements, dates, source references, schema markup, JSON, JSON-LD, registry records, technical specifications, and documented version history.
Machine readability does not guarantee that an independent system will ingest, interpret, rank, cite, or reproduce the information. It improves the organization and accessibility of the public record.
Relationship to Verification
Identity defines who or what the entity is. Verification determines whether specified identity claims are supported according to published criteria.
An entity may have a published Identity Record while individual claims within that record remain pending, documented, verified, historical, disputed, corrected, or otherwise classified.
Identity publication and claim verification are related but distinct functions.
Relationship to Resolution
Resolution is the process of connecting information to the correct identity.
A complete Identity Record provides the attributes, relationships, identifiers, evidence, and historical context needed to distinguish one entity from another and resolve associated records correctly.
Identity establishes the entity. Resolution connects the correct information to that entity.
Relationship to the Registry
The 360WiSE Registry publishes structured identity references for eligible participating entities.
Registry publication may include a unique 360WiSE identification reference and a public record describing the entity, its relevant relationships, and the status of documented information.
Registry inclusion confirms publication within the 360WiSE Framework. It does not constitute governmental registration, regulatory approval, external certification, or endorsement by an independent third party.
Public Boundaries
The Identity layer does not:
- Establish legal identity independent of lawful authorities
- Replace government-issued identification
- Replace corporate registration
- Replace professional licensing
- Guarantee search or AI recognition
- Guarantee correct treatment by third-party systems
- Convert unsupported claims into verified facts
- Erase lawful historical records
- Resolve disputes without sufficient evidence
- Certify ownership where ownership remains legally disputed
- Control external databases or platforms
- Control independent AI outputs
Identity within the Framework is a structured public representation governed by documentation, evidence, transparency, and revision—not a substitute for legal adjudication or regulatory authority.
