WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) – A trip into the woods. It’s a staple of spooky season. But at Faith Horseback Riding Center Saturday morning, the focus wasn’t on frights.
“We do a haunted forest every year and we try to include kiddos too during the day,” said event organizer Jessica Sheldon. “They get to trick or treat around our whole event with all of the jumpscares and everything turned off.”
Sheldon explained that the event was intentionally sensory-friendly so it could be enjoyed by everyone. Instead of scares, kids made masks, played games like a ring toss, and ran across the occasional friendly feline.
“Halloween can be a really over stimulating holiday,” said Sheldon. ”Kids tend to like it but the masks and the costumes and decorations that jump out can be really scary. We turn all of that off so it’s an inclusive event.”
The trail took kids on a trek throughout the farm, and they didn’t leave empty handed. It was a trick or treat event after all, so there was plenty of candy to go around. Parents we spoke with were pleased.
“Oh, we like to be scared,” said attending parent Teasha Cole, ”but we also like pumpkins and we love that there’s horses here and eating all the good food.”
After sundown, the trick or treat walk became a paid haunted attraction. They call it the haunted forest and it doubled as a fundraiser for the horseback riding center.
