First women’s sports-themed bar opens in downtown Kansas City
DECEMBER OF 23, ANOTHER FIRST FOR KANSAS CITY IS NOW OPEN. THE FIRST AND ONLY WOMEN’S SPORTS THEMED BAR, KMBC9 NESS ALAN SHOPE, TAKES US DOWNTOWN FOR A LOOK INSIDE THE DOVE, KANSAS CITY. WE’RE REALLY READY FOR THIS. IT’S CALLED THE DOVE. IT’S NOT ONLY ABOUT WATCHING WOMEN’S SPORTS, BUT IT’S ALSO ABOUT BUILDING COMMUNITIES. THE DOVE NEAR NINTH IN BALTIMORE, OFFICIALLY OPENING THURSDAY AFTERNOON. A new downtown hangout is celebrating women’s sports and community.“The Dub,” located near 9th and Baltimore, officially opened Thursday afternoon, marking what owners say is Kansas City’s first women’s sports-themed bar.The bar will show all major sporting events but will prioritize women’s sports on its TVs. Co-owner Monica Brady said the goal is to create a welcoming place for fans to connect.“It’s not only about watching women’s sports,” Brady said. “It’s about building communities.”Co-owner Rachel Glenn said the excitement has been building for months. “Everybody’s been excited. They’ve been waiting for it,” she said.With the Kansas City Current stadium just a short streetcar ride away, the owners hope The Dub will attract fans beyond game days and continue the city’s growing enthusiasm for women’s sports.“There’s so much momentum behind women’s sports right now,” Brady said. “It’s about putting women on the same playing field as men.”The idea for The Dub has been in the works for more than three years, and Brady said it will welcome fans of every sport, from WNBA basketball to professional volleyball and hockey.“Hopefully, you come to learn a little bit more about sports, find your favorite one, and make a friend,” she said.
