FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) – A local food bank has seen demand increase drastically since the government shutdown, causing community volunteers to step up their support.

Faith Ministry Center holds weekly meal drive-thru events every Wednesday, providing boxed meals to community members in need.

The men and women of the Ironworkers Legion donated a truck full of food to support the food bank’s mission.

Pastor Amy Beitlschees-Albers, meal coordinator at the church, said volunteers who show up every week make the biggest difference.

She has been providing food to Fort Wayne residents for over 10 years and believes the resources are more crucial now than ever.

“We know that the need is real, we know that it’s true. These aren’t people who are just taking advantage, these are real people who really need this food,” Beitlschees-Albers said. “That’s part of our reason…this is our neighborhood too. We are trying to help our neighbors.”

Volunteers said they aren’t sure who enjoys the meal drive thru more — themselves or those receiving food.

Beitlschees-Albers said many neighborhood children come in to help volunteer each week.

The drive-thru meals are open to the public every Wednesday at 6 p.m.
