Issues of AI and deepfakes are spreading like wildfire. To an extent, the celebrities have to issue an official statement to clear the air.
Sitting down for an interview with The Today Show to promote his Broadway show Waiting for Godot alongside Alex Winter, Hollywood’s sweetheart, Keanu Reeves criticized those maliciously using AI. He lashed out at people using AI versions of him to promote dodgy schemes or sell products, saying, “I think that’s happening to a lot of people. We are in that world… it’s not a lot of fun. It’s like, ‘Hey, are you really selling this product?’ No!”
Reeves also addressed a past when he and his long-time girlfriend, Alexandra Grant, had an AI wedding announcement photo surface on the internet. Grant was eventually forced to debunk the image. The actor admitted he hadn’t seen the image until someone showed it to him, remarking, “I hadn’t seen it until someone from the show showed it to me. I knew what was going on but I’d never seen it. We’re in that world, right?”
Reeves has always been vocal about his concerns regarding the rampant malicious use of AI. He has called them “scary”, which is why his contacts ban digital edits. “What’s frustrating about that is you lose your agency. When you give a performance in a film, you know you’re going to be edited, but you’re participating in that. If you go into deepfake land, it has none of your points of view. That’s scary. It’s going to be interesting to see how humans deal with these technologies.”
