LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – The Lexington Police Department hosted their third annual Faith and Blue event Saturday.
“Typically we think of police and we think of law enforcement, right, and criminal activity,” Sgt. Donald Horton with the Lexington Police Department Community Services says.
But Horton says that’s not always the case.
It’s a day to interact with the Lexington Police Department and other public safety officers in a non-emergency setting.
“They really care about their job. It’s more of a calling to them. So when you see that type of intentionality out in the community already, people recognize it,” Horton says.
Folks have a chance to see emergency vehicles up close, grab some lunch, and some got to dance along with Lexington Police Chief Lawrence Weathers.
Public safety officials also demonstrated what they do in different scenarios.
“Every person we deal with isn’t in some type of criminal activity, some people just need help,” Horton says.
Keeping Lexington safe is a community effort.
That’s why police are partnering with GreenHouse17, a non profit supporting people escaping intimate partner abuse.
“I consider ourselves first responders in a different way. We have a 24/7 crisis line,” Diane Fleet with GreenHouse17 says.
She says when people need to seek safety, they need resources immediately.
“I would never want finances to be a reason somebody has to stay,” Fleet says.
GreenHouse17 is collecting donations as the holiday season nears.
“So when the community gives resources again whether that’s you know, some clothes or diapers or towels or gas cards, or whatever, it’s tremendously helpful for folks,” Fleet says.
