CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) — New safety measures are in effect at a sports facility to help curb unwanted behavior.

The Kanawha County Commission says there has been an increase of threats, violence, and inappropriate behavior at youth sports games at Shawnee Sports Complex.

They say this is unfortunately a trend happening nationwide.

To combat the issue, the commission says they are implementing new rules that will allow them to ban people from the property for conduct ranging from obscene language to physical violence.

The commission says they hope this will help keep the games more civil amongst spectators.

“The real issue is the threat of violence against other team members and other parents and physical altercations,” said Ben Salango, the president of the Kanawha County Commission. “Even if it doesn’t involve a weapon, waiting for someone in the parking lot or waiting for a referee off the field is inappropriate.”

County commissioners say the length of the ban depends on the offense.

People can appeal the decision to the comission.

“I want to make sure the referees and coaches and players feel safe,” Salango added.

The new rules are in effect immediately.
