MOSS BLUFF, La. (KPLC) – Instead of bleachers filled with fans, one Southwest Louisiana school filled its gym with faith.

It wasn’t your typical game night at Sam Houston High School – students traded scoreboards for a night of food and fellowship.

“We’ve been planning this night for a long time, and every year our goal is that every person that walks through that door hears about Jesus and who he is,” student Natalie George said.

The Fields of Faith event brought teens from all walks of life across Southwest Louisiana.

“Three years ago, when I heard a lesson, I finally understood why I wanted to be baptized. After that, I started evangelizing throughout my school and the Moss Bluff community,” student Tremaine Johnson said.

It’s not only students, but teachers who share the same passion.

“We coordinate and try to encourage the kids and try to bring them in and deepen their relationship with Christ, and hopefully teach them the skills to teach others,” Sam Houston High School teacher Bill Loftin said.

Like Sam Houston High, thousands of schools across the United States partner with the organization Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

“FCA has been around for 50-plus years. It’s not just for athletes but to empower athletes to use their influence for the kingdom of God,” FCA Ambassador Erynn Boatright said.

FCA isn’t only on the high school level; the organization also has a presence on college campuses.

“That looks different at the high school level. We don’t stop the doors on students that aren’t athletes; that’s not the point, but even having Jesus in schools is cool. We get to serve at college campuses, so here in town at McNeese State, we also have a huddle,” Boatright said.

There are currently over 36 Southwest Louisiana schools that participate in FCA.
