McLachlin recalled his visit to the White House, where President Obama “gives me a big hug and walking out, I get partway down the hallway and I had just apologized to him for about the 10th time for not playing him enough.

“He shouts out, ‘Hey coach!’ I turn around and he says, ‘Hey coach, I love you man.’ I go, ‘I love you too, Barack,’” McLachlin said. “I never expected that at all, especially in front of all these, it’s a very vulnerable thing to say in front of a lot of people, especially in front of all these guys. I said I love you back, and then I cried all the way from there to Pennsylvania Avenue, not believing what I just heard from this guy.”

McLachlin also built the Stanford volleyball program, was the voice of UH volleyball, and became a health care advocate after surviving a stroke.
